Low-cost texting and calls with FlashTXT
Very low-cost texts and VoIP-based mobile phone calls using standard mobile phones are promised under a new service called FlashTXT launched by Talecom, previously known better as the developer of the Wireless Delivered field service applications platform (which continues to flourish). FlashTXT users install a simple, free Java application on their existing handset (platforms such as Symbian and Windows Mobile are supported), and calls and messages can then be handled via a transparent link to a VoIP channel. Users simply pre-pay a fee of £10 to keep their account in credit. Texts between FlashTXT network users are free, and voice calls can be very cheap. Texts sent into the UK from abroad are also cheap; the company quotes an example rate of 5p. Instant messaging is included too, and is said to be compatible with most existing IM services. Talecom says that there is already a large user base for the service abroad, where we understand it is marketed under different branding; so there should be plenty of opportunity for UK customers to take advantage of the free services from the outset. The launch marks a change of gear for Talecom, taking it via resellers into the consumer market. To drive new initiatives the company has been building up its resources by recruiting some experienced executives from the telecoms sector. From a corporate point of view, to begin with the company is mainly targeting major wholesale customers such as broadcasters and football clubs, through which it will offer potentially profitable value-added services such as premium calls (ideal in 'voting' scenarios, on which revenue share arrangements will be offered). Typical Talecom business users could also benefit from the low call rates and cheap or free GPRS-based texting.
