Neo – next-generation handheld from Psion
Neo – next-generation handheld from Psion

Neo is the catchy name chosen by Psion Teklogix for what it describes as its next-generation lightweight entry-level handheld computer. It's a screen-over-keyboard design, similar in form factor to the Workabout range, and the company says it offers an enhanced replacement for users who might have chosen its long-serving Workabout MX. The Workabout Pro however remains available alongside it.

The Neo has a bright 2.7in QVGA colour touch screen display surmounting a 48-key alphanumeric or 26-key numeric keypad, and is unusual in featuring a 'kink' in its profile, angling the screen slightly towards the user for improved visibility.

The processor is a 312MHz Intel PXA 270, which is coupled with 128MB of SDRAM and 64MB of flash memory. The operating system is Windows CE 5.0 in various versions.

For its market position the Neo is small and compact, weighing just 275g and measuring 16.5 cm long by 6.4 cm wide by 3.8 cm high. Wireless networking to Wi-Fi 802.11b/g or Bluetooth standard are included, depending on which model you pick, and various scanning options are available.

Other features can include Psion Teklogix' PTX Connect application to deliver voice over IP (VoIP) with push-to-talk and RFID scanning. The unit has IP54 dust and water protection.

The company says it developed the Neo with input from channel partners, distributors and customers, and is targeting it at a range of markets including light-duty warehousing, meter-reading, logistics and parcel delivery. A removable pistol grip is available.
