Biometric access to MC70 handhelds
You can now get a biometric attachment for the Motorola (formerly Symbol) MC70 and MC75 handheld terminals (or enterprise digital assistants, as they are known). Motorola says the biometric attachment features a 'commercial off-the-shelf platform', and says this offers flexibility and the availability of an existing range of peripherals and accessories. The standards-based platform supports both Motorola's Mobile AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) solution and applications developed by third parties. For the technically-minded, the biometric attachment uses a GSA FIPS 201-certified fingerprint sensor, which is optimised for mobile environments, allowing users to capture one to ten fingerprints in a variety of lighting and environmental conditions. Optional contact and contactless smartcard readers can be used to verify the identity of individuals against secure documents such as ePassports, ID cards, visas or employee ID badges. Motorola seems to be targeting government organisations in particular with the biometric feature, though in practice it should appeal to any organisation where security is a priority.
