Low-voltage chips 'could herald extension of GPS technology'
What are said to be the world's first GPS microchips to operate at only 1.8 volts have been launched by Swiss-based u-blox. The company says there is a reduction of more than 40 per cent in power consumption from previous chips, which makes these especially useful for including in small devices and consumer products. The two new models, NEO-5D and NEO-5G, use u-blox's existing positioning engine, known as u-blox 5. The NEO-5D version is optimised for low cost, using a crystal-based design, while the NEO-5Q version offers higher performance. In particular, the 4Q incorporates 'KickStart', an ultra-fast weak signal acquisition technology that is said to boosts acquisition performance and ensure fast positioning regardless of signal positions and antenna size.
