TDS handheld terminals are now available in the UK through York-based reseller Varlink, adding a further brand to the range available here.

TDS units are produced by US-based Tripod Data Systems, a Trimble subsidiary, and are designed particularly for outdoor use – especially in activities such as surveying. They also target sectors such as field service and the emergency services.

They are notable for their tough specifications; for instance, the Nomad, Recon and Ranger models all meet MIL-STD-810F and IP67 dust and water resistance ratings.

The top-of-the-range Recon model runs Windows Mobile 6.0 and comes with an Intel XScale processor rated at up to 400 MHz, along with 64 MB of RAM and 128 or 256 MB of non-volatile flash storage. All units come with a distinctive yellow casing – a feature that seems to be used as a kind of visual shorthand to designate the outdoor nature of this type of product.
