BT and Siemens VDO in joint tracking project
An Internet-based vehicle fleet management system called Fleetline has been developed jointly by Siemens VDO Trading and BT RedCare, a specialist BT business that focuses on alarm signalling and monitoring. Operators can also choose to have active tracking, mapping, geofencing and communications capabilities. Fleetline is built round a Siemens FM200 on-board computer, which gathers data on speed, clutch use, engine idling, stop time and rear door openings. Data collected by the FM200 which is deemed critical to operating costs is transmitted automatically within 24 hours via the BT Cellnet GSM network. BT RedCare's normal work involves supplying telemetry-based services for maintaining the security of domestic and commercial buildings. It collects data and transmits it over ISDN and GSM networks, giving customers access to the information via a secure Web site. Nick Rendell, managing director of Siemens VDO Trading, says BT RedCare's Internet experience was a crucial factor in its choice of partner. "The FM2000 on-board computer is a well-established easy-to-use piece of equipment. The Internet-based service also had to be easy for operators to use."
Fleet information can be retrieved directly from the Internet, and is also sent by automatic email on a monthly, weekly or even daily basis. Email alerts can be instigated to help operators identify when vehicles exceed pre-set parameters such as speed limits. DAF Trucks, whose own telematics solution is believed to be six months away, is one of the first companies to offer Fleetline. A CANbus interface gives access to the vehicle management computer.
