April/May 2002 LXE launches full Windows terminal A full Windows operating system is standard fare on the VX4, a rugged vehicle-mounted computer launched by LXE. It's the first unit of this type from LXE to run only Windows; the company reckons this represents the future for warehouse and similar environments, offering better integration opportunities than previous systems. It is designed for use in a range of mobile computing applications, including popular 2.4GHz wireless radio technologies. It's built round an Intel Pentium 266MHz MMX processor; is built to run Windows 98 or 2000; and comes with a 10.4 in full colour SVGA touch-screen display. Other specifications include a 10GB internal hard drive that meets vibration testing based on MIL STD 810D; 64MB of SDRAM memory (128 optional); two type II or one type III PCMCIA V2.1 slots; and a Compact Flash slot for ATA drives. Interface options include two RS-232 serial ports, a single USB port and a PS/2 keyboard port. It comes with an IP66 weatherproofing rating, and its operating temperature range is minus 20 deg C to plus 50 deg C. The launch follows hard on the heels of the release of LXE's attractive MX3-CE, a compact Windows CE-based terminal that can be used in both horizontal or vertical mode, serving as either handheld or vehicle-mounted unit. It offers support for integrated barcode reader technology and wide-area or local radio frequency connectivity. The processor is an Intel SA-1110 running at 133MHz.
