April/May 2002 Trailer theft prevention Tracking stolen trailers is all very well, but deterrence is also important. A "trailer perimeter protection system" for curtain-sided and tilt-bodied trailers has been developed by TISS (Trailer Intruder Security Systems), and activates a 122 decibel siren if the door or curtain is opened, the TIR cord cut or the trailer moved. TISS says the alarm is designed to stop thieves proceeding, and to alert the driver of an attempted theft when he is away from his vehicles. The Phone Alert feature uses the GSM messaging system to inform the transport manager or the driver that the alarm has been triggered connection. A GPS tracking system can also be included. The unit comprises a waterproof control box with alphanumeric keypad, a unique alarm code for each trailer, and a display showing time of arm/disarm. When it is activated, an electrical signal is sent to sensors in the doors or round the TIR cord. Power is from a battery, which is recharged when the trailer is connected to a tractor unit. TISS quotes a basic price of £499, with a typical lease price over two years of £29 per month. It says insurance companies will offer up to 15 per cent off goods-in-transit premiums and 5 per cent off vehicle insurance when the system is fitted.
