Dolphin mobiles now Java-enabled

The Dolphin range of mobile computers from Hand Held Products can now run Java-based applications, giving developers much more versatility in the way they can write software for them.

Java is widely used by Internet developers to embed programming capability in Web pages, and is becoming increasingly popular for building mobile wireless applications. HHP says it is ideally suited to the Dolphin platform, whether for graphical or non-graphical applications.

Two Dolphin units will initially run Java programs - the 7400 and 7500. Both now support Java Virtual Machine runtime software, which has been enhanced by Insignia Solutions' Jeode system to run on mobile devices. They are said to be fully compliant with PersonalJava specifications from Sun Microsystems, the Java originator.

  • Hand Held Products has introduced two new repair contracts for users - a One Price Service Contract and a more economical Pay-As-You-Go Service Contract - and has launched an extended warranty covering products for five years. This can include a three-day or five-day turnround time, with the option of overnight replacement of mission-critical units.
