Automatic re-routing of vehicles around traffic jams, visual display of traffic conditions, and the integration of real-time traffic information with vehicle navigation systems - these are some of the benefits being predicted by American developer Telcontar for its latest product, which appropriately enough is called Traffic Manager. The company is also talking about the creation of new traffic applications for mobile phones and PDA users.

Essentially the product is for providers of real-time traffic incident and flow information for fleet tracking, telematics call centres and Internet portals. It complements the Drill Down Server system already provided by Telcontar. Initially it is available in the US, where it works with Tele Atlas/Smartroute and TrafficCast traffic data, but the company says it will also be offered in Europe.
