Online tracking for smaller operators
Swedish truck maker Volvo has developed a version of its Dynafleet telematics package for smaller operators. It relies heavily on the Internet, and is called Dynafleet On-Line. Data on vehicle and driver performance is still recorded in the Log Manager on-board device. However, the operator is not required to download the information, either when the vehicle returns to base or remotely by mobile communications network. Instead, Volvo itself will capture the data from the vehicle at pre-agreed intervals and download it to its own Web site. It will then present the information in easy to-read reports which operators can access via a secure area on Volvo's Web site. Volvo says using recorded data is a key factor in identifying and reducing costs, yet it believes many smaller fleets lack the administrative resources to take full advantage of the potential savings. Hence the new Dynafleet option, which means even small operators without back-office resources will be able to get up-to-the-minute reports on how their vehicles and drivers are performing. Phase one has already gone live and phase two, which will cover driver data, is expected to be operational by the end of 2002.
