Extended comms options in Aplicoms in-cab computer
A general-purpose new in-cab computer, the C-series, has been given a formal launch by Finnish manufacturer Aplicom, which has become one of the mainstays of Europe's in-cab computer market. It is aimed at truck, bus and car telematics applications, and is said to be suitable for a range of tasks from automatic vehicle location to advanced interactive data communications. It uses a powerful 32-bit system architecture and has a real-time multi-tasking operating system. The C-series has an unusually wide range of interface capabilities. It can work with GSM or GPRS mobile data networks, and where users choose the GPRS route, Aplicom provides its own proprietary "IP stack" to streamline links with the user's IT system. The term stands for Internet Protocol, and refers to the system by which connections are made via the Internet between the mobile devices and the host IT system. Aplicom calls the stack "a working assembly of different Internet protocols", and points out that in addition to GPRS, theirs can handle GSM Data Call and TETRA modems that support IP communication. The housing is approximately the same size as a normal vehicle radio. It has bi-colour LED indicators and optional GSM SIM card access at the front. The rear panel has all connectors in a line for ease of access and installation. Input voltage can range from 10 to 30 volts for compatibility with the majority of on-board vehicle systems. The firmware is remotely-upgradeable, helping to keep operating costs down. Examples of the C-series have already been supplied to selected users, including some supplied by Securicor Information Systems, an Aplicom partner. Aplicom also makes a range of attractive and functional in-cab display units, some of which can be used in conjunction with the C-series.
