Web-based tracking system from Siemens VDO

An Internet-based vehicle tracking system called VDO Tracker-Web is being launched by Siemens VDO Trading. It uses an on-board GPS-based telematics device called FM-Skylink to track vehicles, and transmits data back to a control centre via a GSM link. Information on their whereabouts is then available to users via a Web browser.

When vehicles are equipped with a VDO Dayton on-board navigation system, this can also be linked to the tracking system, allowing the vehicle's operating centre to transfer new destinations to the unit in real time.

The service is being launched on a trial basis in selected European countries, and is expected to be available Europe-wide by mid-2003.

Siemens VDO is now also using the Web to give users access to vehicle data stored by its VDO FM 200 on-board computers. These gather and store data on operating times, mileage, fuel consumption and similar operating information. The latest version can also record weight information through a link with the company's VDO Kimax II axle-load indicator.

On the face of it, the tracking capabilities of the Tracker-Web system compete with those of the existing Siemens Datatrak service. However, this uses entirely different technology built round a dedicated network of radio transmitters, and puts more emphasis on vehicle security and fleet management.
