Application development tool
A cross-platform development tool called Application Engine is being developed by Trakware to create customised data collection solutions for PDT, PDA and Smartphone devices. It is aimed at both novice and experienced developers, and is designed to shorten development time scales. Trakware says it has gained experience of a broad spectrum of handheld terminals and PDA-style devices, and identified a need for a common development environment that avoids dependency on specific operating systems or toolkits. Trakware's background is in providing intranet-based data capture solutions using the HTML and XML software development tools. Application Engine produces XML Web pages, and software resident on the handheld executes the XML script and displays pages on screen. There will be a different versions depending on the terminal's OS. The company says it has already proved the system on Windows CE, Pocket PC and Palm, and eventually plans to encompass DOS, Linux and Symbian as well. There is also a version for Windows on the PC.
