Interlink franchise introduces its own tracking system

Reading-based Interlink Express, one of the franchise-holders in GeoPost's Interlink parcels delivery network, has invested in a Web-based vehicle tracking and fleet management system. Although not part of a wider corporate initiative, the system is expected to enhance the operator's tracking and tracing capability, allowing it to offer customers within its area real-time information about the progress of consignments.

The company has chosen the GlobeTrac system, which include an on-board telematics unit using GPRS to transmit location data back to a central server. GlobeTrac supplies telematics solutions produced by WebTech Wireless in the US.

Traffic controllers at the Interlink depot access the tracking information over the Internet, viewing the speed, direction and location of vehicles on a screen map. The controller can also use a "geofencing" system to set up a perimeter within which the vehicle is allowed to travel. There is provision to add in-cab speaker phones and text messaging capabilities later.

According to franchise owner Ravi Daswani: "Our most important assets are vehicles and drivers. If they are not on the road they are not bringing in revenue."

Interlink Express operates from Tilehurst, Reading, collecting and delivering more than 1,800 parcels a day for local businesses in Reading, Newbury, Wokingham and Bracknell.
