Terrafix adds QuikTrak capability

The Terrafix range of vehicle tracking systems, which is used particularly by emergency services, is to be "QuikTrak-enabled", so that it can use the QuikTrak spread-spectrum tracking network in urban areas where conventional GPS tracking can sometimes be compromised.

Terrafix managing director John Rosson says a QuikTrak transponder can now be incorporated into any Terrafix product line. The company supplies a range of its own on-board computers, displays and communication devices.

Terrafix is integrating QuikTrak technology into its mapping and geographic information systems, so that for instance command and control systems can use it to pinpoint vehicle locations. The company says a wide range of options will be offered.

The company recently won a major order to supply over 500 of its latest multi-functional in-vehicle units to Scottish Ambulance Service. The unit incorporates a 16-channel GPS receiver, internal GPRS/GSM modem and a memory card for data logging, and has provision for a hands-free kit or equivalent microphone system to be plugged into the GSM unit, adding a voice capability.

QuikTrak has been rolling out its network in the UK since last year, setting up dedicated spread-spectrum networking sites, starting in London.
