Three-way comms as Intermec handheld goes alpha
The 700 Color Series handheld computers from Intermec are said to represent the first family of rugged mobile computers to integrate up to three radio communication options in a single device. Additionally, the 700 Series now comes with the option of a full alphanumeric keyboard. The three communication technologies are wireless local-area radio to 802.11b standard; a GPRS or CDMA wide-area network radio; and a fully integrated power-managed Bluetooth radio for linking the unit with devices in the immediate vicinity. The optional alpha keyboard features numeric keys, letter keys and common symbols, allows text to be entered using tactile keys instead of a touch screen. The company says it is ideally suited to text-intensive field service, logistics and transport applications. Among other claims to fame, Intermec says the 700 Color is the first enterprise Pocket PC device to incorporate an imager capable of reading one-dimensional and two-dimensional barcodes and taking pictures. The 700 Series Color runs under Windows Pocket PC, and features an Intel 400 MHz XScale microprocessor.
