Wireless scanners cut download time for Parceline
Parcels giant GeoPost, which controls Parceline and Interlink in the UK, says that since adopting an automatic data capture system for drivers, using Intermec handheld terminals, it has reduced the typical download time for delivery data from 20 minutes to "no more than seconds". The terminals have replaced previous models which operated in batch mode rather than in near-real time. Parcels are now scanned as they are loaded on to vehicles in the morning, and then again on delivery. Proof of delivery signatures are transmitted to a main central server on an hourly basis, giving the company a real-time track-and-trace visibility of movements. GeoPost has introduced 2,750 of its 700 Series handheld computers on its Parceline operations, including the latest 700 Color models. Priorities were to find equipment with product reliability and durability, particularly in terms of displays and batteries. The company also wanted ergonomically-designed handheld equipment with integrated keyboards and GSM connectivity for transferring data to and from vehicles on the move.
