Navigation now offered on self-contained in-cab computer
Convergence between transport and field service functions is promised from a new positioning, tracking and navigation system called VehicleGIS launched jointly by InfoWave and Positioning Resources. The system uses the self-contained InfoWave 728 vehicle-mounted computer and display, which had wide publicity when it was launched in the UK earlier this year; but it puts more emphasis on in-cab navigation and mapping functions (hence the term GIS, which stands for geographic information system). These additional navigation and communication capabilities were originally developed by Positioning Resources for field surveying, and feature in the company's existing PocketGIS system for handhelds. The extra capabilities include instant searches to locate and navigate to given sites, assets or destinations, and synchronised data communications with central systems.
The InfoWave 728 itself is a complete rugged mobile computer with a bright A5-sized touch-screen display and Intel StrongARM SA1110 RISC processor. It can run either Windows CE or embedded Linux.
