Smartphone mapping on your dashboard
Siemens VDO and PTV, the German-based mapping specialist, have come up with a combined on-board navigation system and real-time on-board traffic information system that is built round an SX1 smartphone, but can transfer its display directly to a dashboard display unit. The SX1-based system is linked via Bluetooth to a built-in cab radio system, and the driver can use this to call up information at the touch of a button. The request is directed to the PTV control centre, which gathers current traffic information for a 1km area around the vehicle, and transmits it back in the form of text and coloured maps. This display can be seen on the SX1 screen, but is also sent directly to a display built into the dashboard unit - enhancing safety and readability.
