Cybit goes GPRS

Cybit is the latest telematics and fleet management specialist to introduce always-on GPRS communications into its product range. The GPRS capability has been added to the company's "open platform" Web-based solution, Cybitfleet.com, which allows users to track vehicles via the Internet.

The new solution includes an in-vehicle terminal for sending and receiving data messages such as consignment details, directions or job information. Cybit says the upgraded platform will offer improved visibility of vehicles, employees and deliveries, offering live updates to the customers' Web browser every few minutes.

The company has also added enhanced reporting tools to its system, enabling managers to run detailed journey and status reports. It says this makes it possible to generate a range of reports on matters such as timesheet data, detailed historical journeys and exceptions. These can be based on predetermined events such as instances where vehicles leave a defined geofenced area, or when power has been used to operate an on-board devices such as a crane or refrigeration unit.

John Wisdom, Cybit's sales and marketing director, says most telematics systems still rely on SMS messaging for two-way text communication with drivers. Clearly, however, that is changing fast.
