LXEs handhelds to support voice recognition
What could prove the first step towards making voice recognition much more widely available in the data capture market has come with a deal between voice recognition specialist Voxware and LXE, the handheld terminal manufacturer. Under the deal, Voxware's VoiceLogistics applications are to be made available on LXE's handheld wireless computers. Until now, mainstream voice recognition systems for the logistics market have tended to be limited to proprietary hardware - although some manufacturers do use embedded Windows CE as the operating system for their equipment. So far VoiceLogistics has been laboratory-tested on LXE's MX3 and MX6 handheld units. The aim now is to complete beta testing as soon as possible, and then make the system generally availability. According to Jim Childress, president and general manager of LXE: "Our customers have shown an increasingly strong interest in voice technology." Dr. Bathsheba Malsheen, Voxware's chief executive, adds: "This announcement marks the first time that proven, industrial-strength speech recognition will be available on a standard platform from a major industry player."
