DaimlerChrysler relaunches Fleetboard

Internet-based real-time driver performance analysis and traffic management are two of the features of Fleetboard, the DaimlerChrysler telematics system which has been relaunched in the UK.

There are two elements in the Fleetboard package: driver and vehicle management, and logistics management. They can be bought separately or combined, and both offer tracking and mapping facilities.

If the driver and vehicle management (DVL) unit seems familiar, that's because it puts the same strong emphasis on driver performance analysis that was popularised by VeMIS, the UK on-board computer specialist acquired by DaimlerChrysler at the end of 2001.

DVM uses data from the vehicle's built-in CANbus network to analyse gear-changing patterns, use of the retarder, braking behaviour and other activities. On Mercedes-Benz trucks it can extract even more data from the CANbus, allowing it to factor in variables such as vehicle weight and the severity of the route, before awarding the driver a score between 1 and 10.

Unlike VeMIS, however, the DVM unit also now includes an integrated GPS-GSM data modem with a basic messaging facility. On Mercedes-Benz trucks, the messaging is two-way: the driver uses two buttons to scroll through a series of pre-formatted messages to send to base, and can view any SMS messages received in a window in the instrument panel. On other vehicle makes, the driver can send messages but not receive them.

Fleetboard DVM can be fitted to any Mercedes-Benz truck equipped with the company's Telligent maintenance and braking system, as well as any vehicle with a CANbus that complies with the FMS telematics standard, allowing data to be extracted from any truck by third-party software. VeMIS remains available for older vehicles that do not have a CANbus or comply with the FMS standard.

The Fleetboard logistics management unit can be fitted to any vehicle, regardless of age of type. It includes a driver workstation with in-cab monitor and keyboard from Aplicom. It can be used as a stand-alone communications tool or linked to the vehicle computer, in which case it can also display trip details.

Fleetboard Sound40Pro is a separate system for vans, designed to fit into the DIN radio slot. It is not connected to the vehicle CANBus, so there is no on-board data displayed, but it does incorporate a radio/CD player, hands-free voice communication, text messaging, navigation and WAP internet access. Unlike its bigger brother, it operates over faster GPRS networks. The screen can also be used to confirm electronically deliveries have been made and to read details of the next job.
