Hull regeneration team goes wireless
Hull Citybuild, an urban regeneration company dedicated to improving the city of Hull's domestic and business fabric, has introduced a mobile computing solution from Handheld PCs to keep its roving executives in touch with their base. Its staff spend a large percentage of the day visiting local authorities, contractors and stakeholders; as a result they waste a lot of time calling in at the office just to check emails and calendar entries. The organisation introduced handheld computers a year ago, choosing HP iPAQ models, but they did not entirely solve the problem because they lacked the ability to connect users with emails and appointments in real time. Now the company has introduced a solution called Wireless Mail from Handheld PCs, which has been integrated with the organisation's existing IT infrastructure. Andrew Hirst, Hull Citybuild's finance manager, says an initial pilot exercise "confirmed our original instinct that we needed to go wireless." It has also replaced the original handhelds with newer wireless XDAII models from O2.
