Real-time mobile solution for Parcelforce

Parcelforce Worldwide has rolled out a mobile computing solution that enables despatchers to send last-minute pickup requests automatically to the nearest appropriate driver. It also allows barcode scanning of consignments and instant proof-of-delivery feedback by Vodafone GPRS, streamlining the online track and trace process for customers.

All 2,500 drivers working on collections and deliveries have been issued with the new system and trained in its use.

Mobile applications specialist iTouch has provided the software. This company is more usually associated with high-profile applications for media companies (it handles multi-channel voting for several reality TV shows), but it also has a division specialising in mobile business applications for large corporate clients such as Parcelforce.

Symbol Technologies has provided the handheld terminals, which are from its PPT 2837 Pocket PC-based range and have integral scanners. Parcelforce has worked with Symbol in the past; in 2002 it rolled out a wireless local-area network project at sortation centres featuring the use of wearable Symbol scanners.

Ken O'Rahilly, the head of operations development, has called the system "a modern industry revelation that has met and exceeded all objectives."

The system ties in with separate Web developments by the organisation, including the introduction of a 24-hour voice recognition system, and the option for customers to order collections online.
