Truck-specific satnav
Following the launch last year of the Navteq Transport road map dataset, which includes a wide range of truck-specific information, a satellite navigation system aimed specifically at truckers has been launched by UK supplier Navevo. Its ProNav GPS system offers dynamic routing and navigation optimisation based on a vehicle’s dimensions and any legal restrictions – helping drivers to avoid travelling down unsuitable narrow roads or using bridges with weight restrictions. Information such as steep hills, high cross winds and the risk of grounding are flagged up as icons on the software's maps. ProNav comes complete with street level mapping for the UK and Republic of Ireland, plus seven-digit postcode lookup and a six-month free trial of safety camera alerts. The truck-specific features can also be switched off, enabling the device to provide normal car routing as well.
