When staff start to set the mobile agenda
What do you do as a business when staff start using their own mobile devices to stay in touch with the corporate network? How do you ensure security and data integrity? These were questions facing Doncasters, a leading international manufacturer of precision engineered components; and its solution was to launch its own mobile computing initiative - in some cases replacing laptop computers with more affordable and manageable wireless PDAs. It went to Handheld PCs for the solution, and picked XDA II wireless PDAs from O2. These now allow sales executives to call up emails using the company's Lotus Domino e-mail and collaboration systems, as well as accessing various corporate databases. Dave Jones, group network manager for Doncasters, explains: "Our main concerns were based around data security and supporting the devices. We noticed that more and more people were using PDAs and the majority of these had been bought privately." He says that by standardising on a single solution supplied by Handheld PCs, the company can ensure that security requirements are met.
