Navteq adds contours, drops prices
On-board navigation systems that use digital map data from Navteq (and that means many such systems) can now display elevation contours - giving a graphical representation of changes in the height of the terrain along the recommended route. The data now also includes the elevation of landscapes above mean sea level (in metres or feet) at multiple altitude points. Elevation contours are available in Geographic Data (GDF) 3.0 and Standard Interchange Format (SIF+), and are free of charge to Navteq customers in Europe and North America. Meanwhile, companies using Navteq data in computer applications such as tracking and tracing can now benefit from some keen new pricing. As an example, Kingswood MapMechanics, a leading Navteq reseller, has dropped the price of the full base mapping dataset for the UK from £14,200 to just £5,100, and the licence now covers not one user but five.
