LXEs truck-mounted range goes .NET
LXE has embraced Microsoft's .NET technology with its two latest rugged vehicle-mounted computer terminals, the VX6 and VX7. Both are based on Intel's XScale processor family, and run under Microsoft's Windows CE .NET operating system. LXE reckons CE .NET architecture improves users' return on investment by putting them in a position to adopt emerging technologies and applications more easily. It has already launched .NET-based handhelds such as the MX3X, so points out that the new models mean users can extend the concept across truck-mounted and portable units, reducing training and support costs. The two new models are similar, but the VX6 is a half-screen unit while the VX7 has a full screen. The light, lower-profile VX6 also has an integrated 60-key keyboard, while the VX7 has an external keyboard with integrated 2-button mouse. The full specification includes a 400MHz processor, 64MB or 128MB of RAM, and similar amounts of Compact Flash memory. Both models support LXE's RFTerm multi-session terminal emulator, allowing users to run legacy terminal emulation applications cost-effectively (ANSI VT220, TN3270, TN5250). The thinking is that they can then upgrade to a Windows GUI or browser-based design without new investment.
Both units are fully heated and support 100 per cent condensing humidity, making them ideal for freezer/cold weather applications. They have high-visibility indoor/outdoor colour displays that are said to be easy to read in any lighting condition. Both are 800-pixel units; the VX6's is 10.5in wide, while the full-height VX7's is 12.1in wide. Support for 802.11b wireless networking via PCMCIA card is standard. For faster networking, both units are described as 802.11g-ready. When users want to upgrade to 802.11g, LXE says they simply swap out the computer's radio.
