New online mapping contender
Overview Mapping, the company behind the Verilocation GSM phone-based tracking system, has reinforced its position in online mapping by launching its own Web-based mapping 'engine', MapSharp. The system is said to deliver detailed street-level maps to browsers 'almost instantly', using on-the-fly rasterisation (in other words, creating bitmaps from the source OS vector map files as required). The demonstration on the company's new Web site is certainly quick, allowing users to fetch a street map based on any location. The company says developers can use a range of technologies to incorporate the mapping in their applications, including XML messages, SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) instructions or HTML 'get or post' commands. Initially the service covers the UK. The company says European data will be available by the end of the year.
