Sky rolls out high-tech parts delivery network
BskyB (British Sky Broadcasting) is rolling out an ambitious technology-led delivery system based on intelligent "drop boxes" to provide logistics services for its 1,000-plus field engineers. The company has appointed Unipart Technology Logistics to handle the logistics services, and ByBox to provide its smart box-banks. The initial contract, on which no value has been placed, will run for three years. The objective was to create a warehousing and "in-night" distribution service that would deliver parts to engineers by 7.30am each morning. A key requirement was that no engineer should need to travel more than 10 miles to their collection point. Another requirement was that all stock should be traceable via a single system interface. Under the contract, Unipart is handling local warehousing at 30 "forward stock locations", as well as doing deliveries to a potential 14,000 drop-boxes at 600 locations in the ByBox network. These use GPRS communications to authorise access by drivers on a per-job basis. The two contractors have also taken on all the integration work involved.
