More detailed navigation maps from Navteq

More road network information, particularly extra speed limit information, has been added to the digital road network maps supplied by Navteq for on-board navigation systems.

The company says these additional attributes make it possible for navigation systems to offer drivers advanced functionality and more useful information about the road network. As an example, it cites its enhanced geometry, which provides higher absolute and relative accuracy of the road network, can be integrated into vehicles' navigation and telematics systems to improve the performance of the vehicles' adaptive cruise control and adaptive headlight function.

The speed limit attributes detail the actual speed; special speed limit (usually dependent on time, conditions or activities); dependent special speed type (school nearby, weather and so on); and even variable-speed sign, where speed limit information changes according to road conditions and traffic).

Usually such features find their way into the digital map datasets that are offered to the third-party market for tracking and geographic information systems.
