Robust trailer and container tracking
A self-powered tracking system called Fleet-Link for monitoring the movements of trailers and freight containers has been developed by Calgary-based CSI Wireless, and is being made available through a network of distributors worldwide. It includes a solar-powered version, and is seen as ideal for tracking units over very long distances. Installation is said to take just 15 minutes. In America, the initial version uses MicroBurst wireless communication technology from Aeris.net, which is not currently available in the UK, but soon to follow will be a version using more familiar GSM mobile phone technology. Other options under development include a version using Wi-Fi. The system monitors events such as door openings during transit, cargo that has stopped too long outside its origin or destination, speeding, diversions from planned routes, and variations from prescribed load temperatures. Features include advanced power management and motion-sensing to maximise battery life, and essentially unlimited power using the optional solar panel. The rugged, self-contained system comes pre-configured to accommodate a wide variety of telematics and fleet or freight-tracking applications, and is also said to be well-suited to customised applications.
