Collision warning system from RTL

A radar-based collision warning device that alerts drivers if they are too close to other vehicles is being marketed in the UK by a telematics specialist, RTL.

The VORAD system was developed in the United States by Eaton Truck Components, and has been available there since 1994. RTL is now a distributor. Eaton was one of the earliest automotive suppliers to get involved with on-board computing.

The system uses radar to scan the road within a 12 deg arc in front of the vehicle, and sounds various audible warnings in situations such as when the driver is too close to the vehicle in front. The speed, distance and direction of other vehicles are all measured. The radar detector is gyroscope-mounted, so that it can adapt its field of scan when the host vehicle is turning.

Various additional features are also available, such as SmartCruise speed control and the ability to detect risk of side impact. There are also options to link the unit with the vehicle's CANbus electronic information system, and to record data in minute detail in the event of an accident.

A price of £2,200 is being mentioned for retro-fitting the system in a truck. Some US makers include it as standard equipment.
