Promac keeps engineers on track

Promac, a supplier of UPV-CV window and door fabrications, has installed a satellite-based vehicle tracking system in its service engineering fleet, and says it is bringing a range of benefits.

The company examined four tracking systems, then chose the InfoTrack system from TrackCom, which combines GPS-based vehicle tracking with monitoring of speed and other on-board functions.

"It's invaluable in ensuring that there are no discrepancies in time sheets," says executive Wayne Hunter. "It also helps us plan our routes more effectively. We can see at a glance, when a job comes in, which engineer is closest to the customer." He adds that its street mapping capabilities helps the company reach customers much more quickly and easily.

Compliance with health, safety and legislative issues is also easier, the company says. "We can confirm that engineers are taking requisite rest breaks and monitor maximum speeds to ensure that drivers are driving safely and responsibly."

The InfoTrack system is based on what the supplier calls a data processing unit, or DPU, which is fitted behind the vehicle dashboard. This stores data on engine speed, stopping and starting, idle time and mileage, and also transmits the data back to base.

Analysis of fuel consumption, speed, time and performance is handled by Windows-based software.
