Psion targets mobile users with smaller Workabout
A smaller, lighter version of the Workabout Pro handheld computer has been launched by Psion Teklogix, and is being pitched particularly at mobile applications such as direct-to-store delivery, transport and logistics, retail and field service. The company reckons people working in the field are likely to value the weight and size reduction. While sharing the same quarter VGA colour touch screen as the existing model, the new Workabout Pro S is much shorter (190mm compared with 220mm), and significantly lighter (421g compared with 454g including battery). It also has a much smaller built-in keyboard with fewer keys, although arguably the touch-screen capabilities fully compensate for this. Like existing Workabout Pro models, the new one currently runs under Windows CE .NET 4.2 and features an Intel XScale processor running at 400 MHz. It will offer a range of simultaneously-supported radio options including WWAN (GSM/GPRS, CDMA), WPAN (Bluetooth) and WLAN (802.11b). It has an IP54 rating and ability to withstand multiple drops from 4ft on to concrete.
