More wired Web access at airports
Over 160 Internet access screens are being installed by UK Explorer at six airport sites operated by BAA, offering users the ability to log on directly without a computer, or alternatively to connect via their own laptop computers. The roll-out follows the signing of a three-year deal between the two companies. UK Explorer's package differs from conventional Wi-Fi public access points, since it actually provides computer hardware in an environment which it says "is similar to a home or office". The service is aimed particularly at business users needing last-minute Internet access before or after a journey. Computers are clustered in groups of two to sixteen units, and are situated on both the airside and landside of departure gates. Users can pay via sterling or euro coins or credit cards. Each location also provides what the company calls "in-room Internet access" where users can gain wired Internet access at broadband speeds on their own laptop computers. Mains power is provided for running the laptops, and the company says users can log on without changing any settings on their computers.
