More user configurability in latest Destinator

As the business and consumer navigation system markets converge and competition hots up, German developer Destinator reckons it has some attractive new features to offer both camps with the latest destinator PN version of its PDA-based software.

Reflecting its continental origin, the new version is said to be better at guiding users on journeys that cross borders, which can now be made without the need to change maps. It is also easier to navigate to a pre-set destination with a special "home" button.

Users can now decide which attributes to display on screen - distance to destination, speed, time and so on. The threeimensional maps now have less overall detail, which is said to make them easier to read, but have more detail in the foreground.

There is also more detail in the text-to-speech guidance instructions, which now describe the name of streets to look out for, not just "take the next left" and so on. This feature is said to work best on high-end PDAs.

On telephone-capable PDAs, the system can now send the user's current location by text message to other phones in the form of a street address.

The software and map package on its own costs £99 for west European major roads, including Navteq mapping. Packs including a GPS kit are also offered.
