Evaluation: Diamond Jet, handheld terminal from Datalogic
Our impression Datalogic's Diamond Jet is one of the first of a new generation of wireless handhelds aiming to bridge the gap between ruggedised data capture devices and consumer-style PDAs. The Jet is designed for extended mobility, including front-of-house operations: anything from retail environments to POD signature capture. There are twelve models in all. Datalogic in fact calls the Jet "the professional PDA." However, don't let its good looks and anti-scratch silver case deceive you - underneath its sleek exterior lies a rugged data capture device with an impressive array of integrated communications and scan engines. (If silver is too trendy for your operation, Datalogic is planning an alternative version in black for customers who want outside looks to match internal ruggedness.) It has been drop-tested from 1.5 metres (5ft) on to concrete and has IP64 protection against water and dirt ingress. The battery fits snugly into its housing, and only the docking port, electric feed and microphone sockets are exposed to the atmosphere. The slot for the GSM card is safely tucked away in behind the battery. Recharging is via a single cradle or a multiple battery charger unit. The navigation pad has customisable keys, and echoes a mobile phone layout. The operating system is Windows CE 4.2 .NET, so adding applications should be simple. Scan options include 1D ad 2D barcode reading. Datalogic says the scanning rate of 35 per second should ensure faster data capture, with fewer mis-scans. It can scan codes up to 70cm (28in) away, depending on barcode density, and the maximum scan angle is 42 deg. The RFID scanner will operate at up to 10cm, and is said to be compatible with most major makes of tag. The digital imager can be used to capture digital photographs as well as 2D barcodes. Bluetooth short-range wireless networking is standard on all models, and you can add Wi-Fi 802.11b and GSM/GPRS according to need. At 176mm (7in) long and 90mm (3.5in) wide, the Jet is bigger than a PDA , but it is still comfortable to hold in one hand, even for extended periods. The light weight also helps - between 424g and 463g (around 1lb) depending on model. There are scanning buttons on either side, as well a central one on the keypad. The touch screen is a reflective TFT model, backlit. There is a stylus, stowed in the strap rather than in the unit itself. Our verdict Italians are famous for their love of good design, and in the new Jet they have shown you can combine ruggedness and practicality. It takes the handheld forward to a new generation without imposing radical changes in the underlying technology. Datalogic Jet Specifications
