Maps that show traffic density
Street-level digital map data that shows not only real-world traffic speeds on different roads at different times of day, but also traffic densities on those roads, is now available from MapMechanics, the UK-based specialist in digital mapping and geographic information systems. This new facility results from the integration of two key new resources - the latest street-level map data from Navteq, and a new traffic density dataset derived from ITIS statistics. The resultant dataset, GB Traffic Volumes, draws on 900 million GPS sampled points from vehicles on the move, and gives an indication of the relative volume of vehicles on every road in Great Britain. Spatial aggregation techniques have been used to express the volume in the form of a density index of 1 to 16.
