Volvos GPRS Dynafleet offers Europe-wide coverage
Volvo has given a formal launch to the GPRS-based version of its Dynafleet telematics package for truck operators, which was previewed in the last m.logistics. Instead of paying for all data transmissions separately, users of the new version pay a flat monthly fee for all transmissions. Moreover, Volvo has gone a stage further than many other telematics operators by applying the fee throughout Europe, not just in the UK - instantly giving the system new appeal for international operators. But a lower cost has been arranged for users who limit their operations to the UK only. The data service is being provided by Vodafone, whose SIM cards are factory-fitted in the Dynafleet on-board unit. Volvo says the system works not just in Europe, but in some neighbouring countries as well. The existing online reporting and data analysis options remain available for the GPRS version of the system. These come in two versions - one that includes vehicle and driver performance monitoring, driver planning and service planning; and one that also includes a messaging function and vehicle tracking. Volvo says it is expecting the new Dynafleet capabilities to accelerate take-up of the system significantly - an analysis that so far looks quite likely.
