RAC renews Transcomm patrol contract
The RAC has signed a two-year extension to its contract with Transcomm to provide secure communications between its control centres and its patrol fleets. The contract started in 2000, and uses Transcomm's own Mobitex-based Transcomm Network wireless data infrastructure. Transcomm says this covers 95 per cent of the UK population, and delivers better than 99.9 per cent network availability. The network underpins a GPS-based RAC despatch system, under which jobs are allocated logically to the nearest suitable vehicle in real time. It is used with both RAC-branded recovery fleets and those of Norwich Union and Audi. According to Clive Mckenzie-Thompson, IT operations communications manager at the RAC: 'Transcomm's capabilities have allowed us to respond more quickly to customer calls, and our patrol team feels that they are in far closer, secure contact with the head office.' Transcomm was acquired by BT early last year, and later in the year added a GPRS service to its dedicated network. It now offers both technologies, either separately or in combination.
