Slim, light tablet PC could rewrite the rule book for mobility
If, like many in the mobile computing world, you're intrigued by the idea of tablet PCs, but have been waiting for one which is small enough yet also capable enough for your requirements, your search could be over. Motion Computing, a specialist PC builder based in Austin, Texas, has launched a model that is said to come out at around half the size of other 'slate' tablet PCs, and it's available in Britain through the company's network of resellers now. The LS800 is less than an inch thick and weighs just 1kg. The company says this makes it small enough to be attached to a tool belt and carried by mobile professionals working in a range of industries, including logistics and inventory management. Despite its modest size, the LS800 is a fully-equipped hard disk-driven PC running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, and has a generous 8.4in colour display. However, it incorporates some advanced technology, including a small 1.8-inch hard disk drive that is said to have twice the shock resistance of a 2.5-inch unit. The SVGA display, too, equips it well for outdoor use. It provides a 120 deg viewing angle, and optional View Anywhere display technology is said to allow high-quality display clarity and visibility at nearly all angles indoors and outdoors, giving 10 to 1 reduction in sunlight reflection compared with standard tablet PC displays. The chassis is carbon fibre, which is said to keep weight down while giving the right level of robustness for mobile applications. Other features include integrated Wi-Fi (a, b and g), provided by Intel Centrino technology; Bluetooth, infra-red and Ethernet connectivity; a Secure Digital card slot for memory expansion; and enhanced security via Trusted Platform Module (TPM) fingerprint reader and software. There is also a MobileDock docking station, allowing the PC to be used with an external keyboard and VGA monitor in office environments, complete with gigabit Ethernet link. And you can attach an optional CD/DVD writer, too. The retail price for the basic model is £1,095.
