Coca-Cola buys 6,000 Symbol handhelds
Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company is rolling out 6,000 Symbol MC9000 handheld computers to its mobile workforce across its Europe, Middle East and Africa operations as part of a major mobile productivity initiative. They will replace a range of solutions based on paper, laptop computers and standard PDAs, and join 3,000 existing MC9000s. The additional devices will be used for a capturing and delivering information while workers are on the road, and will be involved in functions such as such as inventory, delivery schedules and store set-up and displays to its mobile workforce, customers, partners and suppliers. Four customised versions of the MC9000 are being delivered. The order follows successful operation of existing devices in markets such as St Petersburg, Russia, where the sales force has been using them successfully in temperatures as low as minus 30 deg C. The devices are equipped with a high-resolution colour screen, Symbol Wi-Fi wireless networking, Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 Software for Pocket PC, Intel XScale processor, and rechargeable, extended-use lithium-ion batteries.
