In-cab computer from Masternaut
An in-cab computer has been launched by telematics specialist Masternaut for use with its communications and mobile management applications. It is available as an alternative to the PDA-based approach taken by the company in the past. Masternaut calls the device a vehicle data terminal (VDT), and says it is particularly easy to configure. Up to 18 options can be pre-set, and a separate numeric keypad is provided for easy data entry. The touch-sensitive monochrome LCD screen is said to make it even easier to use, as well as allowing extra data entry options. Typically, says Masternaut, the VDT would operate as part of the company's Web-based system. Jobs can be despatched to the VDT, and drivers send acceptances and notification of job completions by simple press-button commands. Key events can be recorded - for instance, driver login, start and end of day times, refuelling and drivers' hours. The system can also be linked to satellite tracking, and where required, to tachographs and vehicle sensors. All information is captured directly by Masternaut and immediately fed to the Web for display to customers, with comprehensive email reports to show activities. The VDT is fixed on the vehicle dashboard, and takes power direct by wire connection to the Masternaut mobile communications unit that forms part of all the company's on-vehicle systems.
