Real-world pictures in satnav displays
More vividly realistic images of the roadside environment could be incorporated in future navigation systems using mapping from Tele Atlas. The company has acquired a Polish-based mapping company, PPWK GeoInvent, whose speciality is offering multidimensional views of roads. Warsaw-based PPWK GeoInvent achieves this by enhancing its mapping with still and moving images taken from cameras mounted on vehicles. These incorporate a 360-degree digital view of a road, and can include pictures of storefronts, road signs and complex junctions. GeoInvent claims to be the worldwide leader in integrated mobile mapping technology, and its acquisition is seen as adding a significant element to the mix of Tele Atlas products. Tele Atlas, which paid 6.4 million euros for the company, is one of the world's leading suppliers of digital mapping for navigation systems.
