Telcontar limbers up for phone-based satnav push
Navig8 Wisepilot mobile phone-based navigation from Appello is about to land in Britain, following a deal between the Swedish company and Elite Mobile, a UK mobile phone distributor. Wisepilot is an 'off-board' navigation system, meaning that the route-planning is done remotely, and the mapping, routes and other information are served to the user on demand. It uses route-planning from Telcontar, which is built round this company's established Drill Down Service geospatial software platform. Users need to have a Java-enabled mobile phone, and are then able to view maps, driving directions and information on local points of interest and businesses. The Wisepilot system was launched in Sweden a few months ago with TeliaSonera, the telecoms operator, and is now said to be the market-leading product there in its sector. Appello is a Swedish-based specialist in navigation systems.
