Affordable add-on GPS
As more and more drivers adopt software-only satellite navigation solutions running on PDAs, there's a growing need for an affordable and reliable add-on GPS device to handle the satellite location function. Which is why the latest BPS module from Taiwanese manufacturer Globalsat could appeal. The BC337 connects to any PDA with a CompactFlash slot, and is said to draw very little power from it. It is based round the Sirf Star III Low Power GPS chipset, already well established in the GPS market, and incorporates its own built-in antenna. The makers quote a positional accuracy of 10 metres or better, and the claimed "cold start" time is 42 seconds. "Warm start" time is 38 sec, and hot start 1 sec. The distributor is Edinburgh-based EasyDevices, and the price is £69.
