Healthcare company tracks sensitive deliveries

In a move to improve patient safety and care and provide real-time monitoring and end-to-end traceability of medical deliveries, Healthcare Logistics has installed a remote temperature monitoring and logging system from Masternaut in its van fleet.

Masternaut has developed a special version of its satellite-based tracking system for the application, taking input from temperature sensors on the vehicles. This allows movements and load compartment temperatures to be monitored live by the operator via the Web.

The Masternaut on-board unit is linked to Transcan temperature logging and control equipment, and the system includes in-cab data communication and navigation, using rugged HHP 7900 handheld devices from Hand Held Products. The handhelds link to onboard telematics and sensors via a dashboard cradle.

The system also features an integrated navigation system. Electronic delivery manifests are received directly from a UPS RoadNet scheduling system, and drivers are then guided to each delivery by means of on-screen maps and voice commands.

Healthcare Logistics is currently expanding its fleet to over 200 vehicles, of which around half are equipped for both ambient and chilled-temperature transport. The company delivers pharmaceuticals and healthcare products to every hospital and every wholesaler every day, and many deliveries also go to pharmacies, health centres and homes.

Navigation is seen as particularly useful for managing pharmacy and home deliveries, especially where drivers may not be familiar with the territory. The system automatically guides them to each location.
