Traffic alert system wins award
MX Data walked away with the award for best data application on a personal mobile device at this year's Mobile Data Association awards. It was presented for the company's Traffic TV, a map-based application for mobiles that provides its users with live "at a glance" real-time Trafficmaster information overlaid with CCTV camera pictures from the trunk and motorway network of Great Britain. The application shows road conditions and helps road users save time and avoid congestion and accident black spots. The best short-range data application award went to the Kolan Partnership for its StarSight Project, a multi-service architecture delivering solar-powered Wi-Fi within solar powered street lighting units, providing light and broadband internet access and offering the future potential for voice transmission as well. The Wi-Fi implementation in StarSight is intended primarily to provide control of the street lights, enabling its users to manage battery life, on/off mechanisms and maintenance. It also provides security monitoring. However, as increased Wi-Fi bandwidth becomes available, it will allow business, government and the local community to access its features as well.
